If Elizabeth Is Okay It, I’m Okay With It

Posted in: Uncategorized

I think the question “Where were you when you heard they found Elizabeth Smart alive?” will go down in history with “Do you remember where you were when the Pope was shot…when Reagan was shot…when Princess Di died…when they were chasing OJ down the LA freeway…when 9/11 happened…”

Only because Elizabeth Smart and her family appear okay with the delay of the trial of the man who stole and abused her, I guess I have to be okay with it, too.  The profound faith of her family has always amazed me, and her father’s strength is something I will never understand.

During her interview with Oprah, I remember Elizabeth saying “Once I finally got home after this terrrible ordeal, my parents sat me down and said ‘you have 30 days.  30 days to grieve, to be depressed, to mope and be sad.  30 days to do no chores and have no responsibilities around the house.  That man took 9 months from you – he can have 30 more days and that’s it.  This will not control your life.  This will not become an excuse to change the course of your life.  We will not surround you with teams of therapists and councelors and psychiatrists or allow you to be medicated.  You may grieve for 30 days and then you will depend on God and your family to provide everything you need emotionally and psychologically, just like you always have.’

Clearly their choices in life have been good choices and I was shocked to realize I was actually a fan of those words and a fan of her parents decision on how to handle the post-trauma.
