Barry McKay & Don London … C’MON!!!

Posted in: Uncategorized

It’s no secret that Barry McKay (the guy who offers  you plenty of 2WD musical love each weekday from 10 am – 3 pm), Don London (the guy who gets you through your stress free drive home from 3 pm – 7pm) and I (Jenna in the Morning 5:30-ish to 10 am) have known eachother for YEARS!  We’ve become great friends and definitely enjoy eachothers company…usually.

We were out to eat at Jersey Mike’s the other day (YUM!) – the stories, jokes and conversation were as fast-paced and entertaining as always – plenty of laughs (infact, I believe Diet Coke even shot out of Barry nose at one point).  And then things seemingly changed when I excused myself to step outside and make a phone call.

Upon walking back into the restaurant, I found THIS:  (gasp!)

Barry & Don

C’mon guys!  REALLY? Fortunately, their manners got the best of them and their phones instantly disappeared, but not before I took the opportunity to  snap a picture.  Boys…

Tonight is movie night.  I’m going to a special screening of  “Edge of Darkness” with my buddies.  It’s the new action, drama, thriller from Mel Gibson.  According to MSNBC.com, Mel Gibson says (regarding acting) “It’s more lucrative. It’s fun. It’s my first love,” Gibson told Hello! magazine of his decision to get back in front of the cameras. “I took time away — I felt that I was stale — and I came back and I feel like some kind of maturation happened.”  The trailers for the movie look great.  I’ll let you know what I think about it and of course I’ll be looking to www.imdb.com for the rating as I always do.  Mel Gibson was one of the many celebrities to donate their time for the Haiti relief TV special last Friday night.  Have a great week.  Don.

We’re asking every man, woman and child in Hampton Roads to donate $1 dollar to the American Red Cross International Relief Fund.  It’s something we can all do and together, we can raise $1.5 MILLION DOLLARS to help this devastated country.  The news reports are so sad and there is more tragedy ahead as people with infections that go untreated die.  If there are any survivors that haven’t been found yet, they are right on the edge of possible survival and that’s a big IF at this point.  Have you heard of the rule of “4’s” regarding human survival?  We can, on the average, live for about 4 minutes without air, 4 days without water and 40 days without food.  The people providing aid in Haiti are simply amazing.  This is a challenge what will go on and on for a very long time.  Please do what you can to help.  Thank you!  Don.  There is more information at http://www.2wd.com/pages/6161371.php .

Did you happen to have a three day weekend?  Whether they are two or three day weekends, they sure go fast.  We saw the new Denzel Washington movie “The Book of Eli”.  It was pretty good.  Do you ever look at the web site www.imdb.com ?  They have all the movie information you could possibly want and viewers, real people, rate every movie that comes out after they’ve seen the movie.  The ratings are on a ten point scale and are fairly accurate to my taste so I like to use it as a guide before I spend my time and money on a movie.  “The Book of Eli” posted a 7.4 on IMDB when I looked at it over the weekend which is a pretty good score.  Karen, her son Daniel and I had dinner at Carabba’s in Chesapeake before the movie and it was delicious.  Karen treated so it tasted even better!  She’s quite the “Brown Eyed Girl”.

Wow it’s Friday afternoon.  What are you doing this weekend?  I’ll be cooking out tonight with Karen, tomorrow dinner out and a lot of relaxing all weekend.  Donald is headed back to college.  He had a five week winter break which flew by.  Looking for something fun to do over the weekend?  I’d like to recommend two movies.  The first is “The Blind Side” starring Sandra Bullock.  That movie is terrific.  The next would be “Avatar”.  I really enjoyed that one.  Here’s the link to the trailer from Avatar if you’re interested in seeing the movie.  It’s already grossed over a billion dollars worldwide.  Now that’s a lot of money!

O-T-C Meds To Keep At Home

Posted in: Uncategorized

Nonprescription medications in the home medicine cabinet could save a trip to the doctor. The January issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter lists more than a dozen over-the-counter medications that can help manage minor ailments.

Examples include:

Swim-Ear, Auro-Dri — These products can help after swimming and also may be helpful in treating mild outer ear infections that result from swimming or water getting in the ear. The acetic acid in these products helps re-establish the ear’s normal environment and discourages yeast and bacterial growth.

Debrox, Murine Earwax Removal and Mack’s Wax Away eardrops — The active ingredient in these products, carbamide peroxide, is ideal for dissolving wax in the outer ear. Wax is then flushed out using warm water in a bulb syringe.

Chloraseptic spray — This spray helps relieve mild-to-moderate sore throat pain. After the initial taste wears off, the spray can be quite soothing to the throat for several hours.

Famotidine (Pepcid AC, others) — Pepcid is one of several H-2-receptor blockers that eases stomach upset and indigestion. It reduces the production of stomach acid. Other drugs in this category are ranitidine (Zantac) and cimetidine (Tagamet). For adults over age 50, an evaluation for underlying medical conditions is recommended before using these products on an ongoing basis.

Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) — This medication is helpful for stomach upset, heartburn and diarrhea, including traveler’s diarrhea.

Loperamide (Imodium) — This is an excellent drug for diarrhea. Intermittent use can help those who have diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. Loperamide shouldn’t be used for chronic undiagnosed diarrhea. Changes in bowel habits can signal an underlying health concern such as a tumor or infection.

1 percent hydrocortisone (Cortaid, others) — The strongest nonprescription hydrocortisone, this cream can soothe minor skin irritations, inflammation and rashes. It can be used almost anywhere except right around the eye.

Loratadine (Claritin, Alavert, others) — This new generation of nonprescription antihistamines generally is less sedating and causes fewer side effects than previous-generation products. For instance, urinary retention in older men with enlarged prostates occurs with older agents such as Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton, but this is not typically seen with loratadine use.

Docosanol (Abreva) — This product may help shorten the life of a cold sore by a day. When applied at the earliest point of an outbreak, it may even help prevent the cold sore blister from forming.

Haiti: How to help

Posted in: Uncategorized

Text HAITI to 90999 for an

immediate $10 donation to the red cross.

Although they are too grateful and classy to say this directly, I am not :-)   Donations of food and clothing are appreciated, but what the International Red Cross needs right now is cash.  They need money immediately to assist in the search and rescue efforts in Haiti.  Collecting, packing, shipping and distributing clothing will come later.  This is a SEARCH AND RESCUE – time and resources are critical.

If you can’t afford to donate money, please offer up a few prayers so that those who can afford to donate WILL donate.
